Scope
The hazards associated with chemicals in the laboratory cannot be overlooked. Critical dangers include chemical usage, the mixing process, storage, misuse, and disposal of chemical residues. Implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols in the laboratory is essential to minimize health risks, prevent illnesses, avoid property damage, and reduce the likelihood of accidents. This training course is designed to help participants understand and implement the safety measures required for handling chemicals safely and effectively.

General Course Objectives:
The aim and objectives of the Chemical Safety training program are to ensure that participants are able to:
  1. Maintain and organise laboratories and chemical storage warehouses.
  2. Identify various risk factors that exist in handling chemicals.
  3. Understand the handling of chemical materials and waste.
  4. Carry out safe work procedures in handling chemicals
  5. Understand administrative management in handling chemicals
  6. Understand procedures and handling emergencies in handling chemicals.
Course Content:
  1. Introduction to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in handling chemicals, including in the laboratory.
  2. Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH)
  3. MSDS and labeling management
  4. Identification and potential hazards in handling chemicals.
  5. Laboratory management
    • Laboratory design and layout
    • Laboratory layout system
    • Air circulation ventilation system
    • Safety culture
  6. PPE in the laboratory and when handling chemicals (small and large quantities)
  7. Ergonomic applications in handling chemicals.
  8. Preparation and implementation of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) in handling chemicals.
  9. Monitor exposure to hazardous chemicals
  10. Checking and monitoring worker health
  11. Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) audit
  12. Evaluation of the Laboratory Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) system
  13. Argon gas handler
  14. Handling emergencies in the Hazardous and toxic materials Laboratory and first aid (chemical spills, handling broken chemical bottles, etc.) (For laboratory scale quantities and drum scale quantities and IBC tanks)

Prerequisites: Valid Medical Certificate from Doctor/Clinic.

Certificate:
All persons who successfully complete the course based on the performance standards will receive
  • A PT Samson Tiara certificate for Chemical Safety;
  • A laminated wallet course qualification card.
